Holy Orders

What is Holy Orders?

Before His Death and Resurrection, Jesus told His closest followers to love and serve others as He loved and served them. He created the priesthood.

Our priests and deacons help to lead God’s Church on earth and serve and care for God’s people.

Holy Orders is the sacrament that creates and defines the role of deacon, priest and bishop. People called by the Holy Spirit to receive the sacrament undergo rigorous preparation and are blessed and anointed by the Archbishop so they can serve the Church.

Answering God's Call

If someone thinks he is being called to the priesthood or diaconate, please contact the pastor or a priest of your choice. He will put you in contact with someone to help you discern your call.

If someone thinks she is being called to vowed religious life as a sister, please contact anyone of our parish staff or contact one of the several congregations in Dubuque, including the Sisters of St. Francis, Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Trappestines of Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey.

Men discerning a call to permanent diaconate may contact Deacon Bill Biver:
