The Weekend of May 11-12
by Adam Mumm
This Weekend at SJTW
Father Paul joins us for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, our second First Communion weekend and Mother’s Day!
In the Readings
First Reading Acts of the Apostles 13:14, 43-52
In the First Reading, Paul and Barnabas go to the synagogue on the sabbath. Many Jews and converts to Judaism follow them. Paul and Barnabas speak to them and tell them to remain faithful to the grace of God. On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathers to hear the word of the Lord. Some Jews are filled with jealousy when they see the crowds and begin to contradict Paul. He and Barnabas tell them, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.” The Gentiles are delighted and glorify God, and the word of the Lord continues to spread through the whole region. The Jews, however, stir up a prosecution against Paul and Barnabas and expel them from the city.
Second Reading Revelation 7:9, 14b-17
In the Second Reading, John, the author of Revelation, has a vision of a great number of people from every nation and language wearing white robes, holding palm branches and standing before the throne and the Lamb. One of the elders tells John that the people are the ones who survived the time of great distress and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. He tells John they stand before God’s throne to worship Him because He shelters them, shepherds them, leads them to springs of life-giving water and wipes away every tear from their eyes.
Gospel John 10:27-30
In the Gospel, Jesus says, “My sheep hear My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”
Please pray for our Second Grade students as they receive First Holy Communion during the 5:00 and 11:00 Masses this weekend!
During the 5:00 Mass, we will welcome a new member into God’s family through baptism!
Father Paul’s Homily
Printed copies of Father Paul’s homily are available in the main entrance to church.
Sunday is Mother’s Day! After Mass, volunteers from Dubuque County Right to Life will be in the church entrances offering roses in honor of Mother’s Day for a $2 donation. Thank you for your generosity.
Sunday is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. If you would like to participate you can find some prayers for vocations here.
Have you heard of the Butterfly Effect? It’s the idea that even the tiniest of actions, like the flap of a butterfly’s wing, can make huge differences in the world. During Lent, we were renewed by the Holy Spirit much like a caterpillar is transformed into a butterfly. Now it’s time for us to “flap our wings” and change the lives of others. Join us this Easter as we learn to follow the Spirit and help the world be Transformed!
