The Weekend of February 23-24
by Adam Mumm
This Weekend at SJTW
Father Tom joins us as we celebrate the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time.
In the Readings
First Reading 1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23
In the First Reading, David’s enemy, Saul, is searching for him. While Saul and his men are sleeping, David enters his camp and finds him. David’s nephew says this is the perfect time to kill Saul while he is asleep. David tells him he will not kill the Lord’s anointed. Instead, David takes the spear and water jug from near Saul’s head. He later tells the troops he has the king’s spear and that an attendant should come and get it. David says, “The Lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness.”
Second Reading 1 Corinthians 15:45-49
In the Second Reading, Paul tells us that while we are first like Adam and are of this earth, this is just a precursor of what’s to come. Because Jesus saved us from our sin, we now have the hope that we will live again in heaven when we leave our earthly life.
Gospel Luke 6:27-38
In the Gospel, Jesus tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who mistreat us. If someone hits our cheek, we should offer them the other. We are called to do more than to only love those who love us. We are called to be merciful as our Father is merciful. That means we love our enemies and do good to them and we lend expecting nothing back. Jesus tells us, “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.”
