The Weekend of August 3-4

This Weekend at SJTW

Father Tom joins us for the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

In the Readings

First Reading Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23

In the First Reading, we hear about the “vanity of vanities.” The reading warns us not to be preoccupied with working to gain personal wealth or property. “For what profit comes to the man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest.”

Second Reading Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11

In the Second Reading, Paul tells us that if we have been raised with Christ, then we should seek what is above and not of what is on earth. Our life is hidden with Christ, and when Christ our life appears, then we too will appear with Him in glory. Paul tells us to “put to death” the parts of ourselves that are earthly like immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and greed. He tells us to stop lying to each other. We have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in the image of our creator. There should be no more division because Christ is all and in all.

Gospel Luke 12:13-21

In the Gospel, someone in the crowd says to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” Jesus replies, “Friend, who appointed Me as your judge and arbiter? . . . Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Jesus then tell the crowd a parable about a rich man whose land produces a bountiful harvest. The man says he should tear down his barns and build larger ones so he can store up his many goods and grains for many years and can rest, eat, drink and be merry. But God says to the man, “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong.” Jesus then says, “Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”
