The Weekend of August 17-18
This Weekend at SJTW
Fr. Tom joins us for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
In the Readings
First Reading Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10
In the First Reading, princes ask a king to put the prophet Jeremiah to death because the message he shares was demoralizing soldiers and the people. They throw Jeremiah into cistern to drown. But the cistern has no water, only mud, which Jeremiah sinks into. A court official tells the king that the princes are wrong in what they have done to Jeremiah and that Jeremiah will die of famine as there is no more food in the city. The king orders him to get Jeremiah out of the cistern before he dies.
Second Reading Hebrews 12:1-4
Paul says that since we’re surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, we should work to remove every sin and burden clinging to us so we can keep running the race before us with our eyes on Jesus. Jesus died on the cross for the sake of the joy that lay before Him and now sits at God’s right hand. Paul tells us to think about how Jesus was rejected so that we won’t lose heart. In our struggles against sin, we haven’t yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.
Gospel Luke 12:49-53
Jesus tells His disciples, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is My anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, and mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Aware / Awake
This weekend, we begin our new series, “Aware / Awake!”
Have you ever had a “light bulb moment” when suddenly everything makes sense and you know what you need to do? In our lives, we are aware of all kinds of problems and issues. But what happens when the light bulb comes on and we become awake to what we can do to help? Join us as we learn to grow from being aware of the Kingdom of God to being awake to opportunities to bring it about!
