Annunciation – How Can This Be?

The Annunciation

“How can this be?” These are words of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she came to know that “with God nothing will be impossible.”

What is our question, “How can this be?”

Second Vatican Council theologian, Karl Rahner, SJ, stated that we have an “orientation to the Divine.” Thomas Merton observed that “we are shining like the sun.”

How can this be? Am I afraid of bliss? I am me and I am forgetting most of my own life. This causes me to wonder if we move from loving God for our sake, to loving our being for God’s sake (will). “Thy Kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

Advent announces Mary’s faith, “…let it be done to me according to Thy word.” Perhaps being “with child” for us could mean “with neighbor,” “with stranger,” “with all,” in unity? Living that way may not erase conflict or pain but embracing it for Christ’s brings bliss.

Lord, may we seek Your will and grace this Advent.

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee…
