The Weekend of September 1-2

St. Joseph the Worker Mass Times

This Weekend at SJTW

This weekend, Father Dave joins us to celebrate the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

In the Readings

First Reading Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8

In the First Reading, Moses tells the people to follow God’s commandments and them alone. He tells them not to add to or subtract from the commandments because they are just since they come from the wisdom of the Lord. Moses says others will see them as wise because they are close to God and follow His commandments.

Second Reading James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27

In the Second Reading, St. James writes that everything that is good and perfect comes from God. He tells us to do more than just hear the Word of the Lord. We are to be “doers” and put God’s Word into practice in our lives. St. James writes that we are to follow the Word by helping others and keeping ourselves unstained by the world.

Gospel Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

In the Gospel, Jesus’ disciples are not following the Jewish tradition of eating meals with clean hands. The Pharisees and scribes ask Jesus why His disciples are not following tradition. Jesus replies by calling them hypocrites because they are treating human concepts as the law of God. He tells them they are disregarding God’s commandment but are clinging to human tradition. Jesus tells His disciples that “nothing that enters one from the outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.” Mainly, we are not corrupted because of our surroundings. If we sin, it is because of our own evil thoughts and flaws.
