Immersion Opportunities

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Margaret Mead

What is an Immersion Opportunity?

As Christians we are called to reach out to others in service. Clearly there are many needs and opportunities for service in our own community. Many people tirelessly volunteer their time and energy to those needs.

A service/immersion opportunity is a different type of experience. It is a chance to enter into solidarity with those of a different culture and way of life. It help us step out of our comfort zones. We can try to experience and understand the issues that affect the poor and vulnerable.

Previous Immersion Trips

For the past few years St. Joseph the Worker has facilitated an annual Service/Immersion trip for adults. Groups have spent a week in New Orleans with Katrina clean-up. They also went to a Honduras mission for abused women and children.

In 2009 a group went to Appalachia to work at Bethlehem Farm.

In 2011 members of the parish went to the Working Boys’ Center in Quito, Equador, and in 2013 to Saint Lucia to work with the Franciscan sisters assigned there.

We have also gone on service trips to our sister parish, St. Therese of the Child Jesus Parish in Haiti.
